Product Coverage Counsel Job Summary

The Product Coverage Counsel is responsible for creating, reviewing, editing, and organizing the Company's policy forms and endorsements and maintaining the Company's insurance product catalog.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service
  • Draft new forms and endorsements and review manuscript forms and endorsements for all lines of business at both the E&S and Specialty Admitted segments
  • Edit, organize and maintain the Company's insurance product catalog to include the Company's policy forms and endorsements for all lines of business within the E&S segment as well as the Specialty Admitted segment
  • Conduct ongoing extensive and detailed research on how the laws of all fifty states affect the construction and interpretation of the Company's policies, forms and endorsements
  • Analyze complex insurance contracts in all policy forms, including but not limited to: CGL (including NY Labor Law, Construction Liability, Construction Defect), Property, Workers' Compensation, Professional E&O (Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living Facilities, Healthcare Professional Liability), Inland Marine, Directors' & Officers' Liability, Excess Casualty and Umbrella policies
  • Collaborate closely with the Company's Claims and Underwriting Departments to determine what new forms are needed and what existing forms need to be revised
  • Works with Claims management and Claims Counsel on identifying litigation and form application trends and addressing impact on existing forms and products
  • Collaborate with internal and external clients and counsel to identify and implement solutions to complex business and legal challenges
  • Review and edit reinsurance contracts
  • Develop relationships and network with clients and business partners across the organization
  • Attend and participate in roundtable meetings with Claims leadership on matters involving high complexity and/or financial exposure
  • Share significant court decisions and/or litigation trends and their impact on the business with Leadership
  • Responsible for chairing the forms committee/product development
  • Assist Claims Leadership, Ceded Re and Risk Management and Corporate Legal departments with ongoing projects and assignments

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of insurance policy language, forms and endorsements
  • Advanced knowledge of pertinent insurance law
  • Ability to draft insurance policy language and reinsurance contract language that is grounded in knowledge of insurance law

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Juris Doctorate Degree required
  • State Bar Admission required
  • Minimum of five years of experience as an attorney handling insurance policies (drafting insurance policy language to include new policy forms and full endorsements), coverage disputes and litigation at an insurance carrier required
  • Prior experience handling matters involving reinsurance contracts, reinsurance coverage disputes and litigation preferred
