Job/Internship Description

The Environmental Health & Safety Intern will help oversee multiple projects/facilities within the plant for safety and environmental compliance and sustainability. The chosen candidate must have good time management skills and the ability to prioritize project needs for an efficient operations schedule.

The Environmental Health & Safety Intern will provide support and guidance to safety projects, environmental mapping, and project development teams to aid in the company's goal. The EHS Intern will assist in implementing and achieving the Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety Goals.

The Environmental Health & Safety Intern will report to the EHS Specialist regarding project-specific needs with support.

  • Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing and implementing safety programs and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Conduct job risk assessments (JRA) to identify potential hazards and develop strategies for mitigating risks.
  • Perform 360 guarding assessments to identify and address potential safety hazards and Then plan and design improvements to the workplace safety measures
  • Performs project or facility environmental inspections or trains project team members to perform:
    • Stormwater/construction stormwater/SWPPP
    • Waste Management tracking and identifying opportunities to improve the waste stream and recycling.
    • Air Emissions/Operations tracking to monitor plant emissions for potential permitting changes.
    • Hazardous Waste monitoring and identifying opportunities for improving environmental and financial operations within operations.
  • Completes or reviews safety and environmental reports for project(s)
  • Understands and helps develop project definitions, materials, processes, and quotes for future projects
  • Ensures quality documentation being completed and filed
  • Supports Project Engineer with the development of work packages that include safety and environmental best practices
  • Participates in the project planning meetings and client meetings as needed
  • Participates in providing feedback to estimating staff and "lessons learned" sessions
  • Maintains relationships with environmental sustainability advocates and groups to improve community outreach

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree or Associate's Degree (or equivalent school credits) in environmental health, environmental engineering, environmental studies, or related field. Combined education and experience will be considered to meet this qualification
  • Strong and proven knowledge of federal water, air, and waste environmental regulations
  • Ability to competently develop multiple projects in a defined area for safety and environmental sustainability
  • Ability to quickly obtain state and local knowledge of safety and environmental regulations related to various construction activities/projects
  • Ability to educate team members, including project management on appropriate safety and environmental regulations, sustainability and best practices
  • Familiarity with using computers and standard software
  • Ability to work within a team environment collaborating and presenting information

Critical Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and facilitate presentations that are tailored to the audience.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with computers

Work Environment

The majority of time is spent in a manufacturing production environment where personal protective safety equipment must be worn, and proper safety precautions must be observed.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to work in a typical manufacturing facility which could entail walking, climbing, and moving around working equipment. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required to be worn during shift, when in production and warehouse environment.

NOTE:

  • This is a paid internship for a set 2 month term and does not qualify for benefits.
  • Working hours are Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm onsite. This is not a remote position.
  • Out of state candidates must relocate to the Eastern Shore of Maryland at own expense.
