JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Central Sterile/Service Manager, performs decontam and disinfection duties of reusable surgical instruments, reusable medical devices and patient-care equipment, sorts and disposes of all refuse, sharps and soil-linen for Galter Medical Pavilion. Performs cleaning, disinfecting, assembly, testing and packaging tasks of all reusable surgical instrumentation, reusable medical devices and patient-care equipment. Performs steam sterilization and EtO sterilization of reusable surgical instrumentation, reusable medical devices and patient-care equipment. Performs case-cart preparation for surgical procedures, consisting of instruments and supplies, defined by computer generated pick-slips and experience based determinations. Performs case-cart preparation for Family Birthing Unit, defined by pre-determined pick-slips. Performs patient-care equipment management, through daily distribution of clean equipment, collection of discontinued soiled equipment, maintainence of equipment tracking card-x-system and data entry of daily patient charges. Performs Storeroom Tech and Linen Tech duties after hours. Performs Central Transport duties on the night-shift through distribution of patient-care equipment, distribution of medications from Pharmacy, distribution of lab orders, distribution of patient-blue-plates, and morgue transports. Promotes effective interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships maintaining professional conduct at all times.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.

1. Performs decontam procedures of reusable surgical instrumentation and reusable medical devices, following appropriate infection-control and safety procedures.

2. Performs decontam procedures of reusable patient-care equipment, following appropriate infection-control and safety procedures.

3. Performs soil-equipment rounds from all Nursing Units, utilizing appropriate infection-control and safety procedures.

4. Maintains documentation of patient-care equipment tracking processes. Performs data- entry of daily rentals for patient-care equipment. Maintains process for equipment rentals, including Specialty Beds, CPM Devices and Vac Pumps.

5. Performs clean processing duties inclusive of all reusable surgical instrumentation for Surgery, Outpatient Surgery & Endoscopy, Family Birthing Unit, Emergency Department, Cardiac Cath Lab, Radiology, Respiratory, Family Practice Center, Wound Care Center, Doctor's Suites in GMP and off-site Satellite Facilities.

6. Performs restocking of implants, such as, plates, screws and pins, to specific Surgery Trays.

7. Performs both steam sterilization and gas sterilization, following specific procedures.

Maintains documentation of sterilization records accurately. Validates sterilization records on assigned shift. Establishes sound infection control practices have been met.

8. Operates and monitors all equipment in Central Sterile/Service, to include case cart-washer, washer/disinfector, steam sterilizers, EtO Sterilizer/Aerator, heat/sealers and steam/gun.

9. Performs clean processing duties by generating Surgery Schedules and Preference Cards utilizing the "ORSOS" soft-ware system.

10. Performs clean processing duties through the assembly of Case Carts for Surgery and the Family Birthing Unit.

11. Performs clean processing duties through the assembly of Case Carts and complete Instrumentation for the Open-Heart Program.

12. Performs clean processing duties through the assembly of the Emergency Urology Cart and the Orthopedic Casting Cart.

13. Performs clean processing duties through the "Code Blue" Crash Cart Exchange Program.

14. Performs Orthopedic Traction assembly on patient beds, hardware only.

15. Communicates daily, utilizing Shift-Report to oncoming shift any incomplete tasks, equipment problems or shortages, any processing problems or anything that contributes to the continuity of services.

16. Observes and acts as a resource person to Central Sterile/Service Techs I, in all departmental activities.

17. Assists Central Sterile/Service Coordinator in the monitoring of disposable supplies to include medical and non-medical supplies.

QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or G.E.D.; basic writing, reading and mathematical skills essential

Sterile Processing cerification

a comprehensive knowledge of surgical instruments, infection control practices, sterilization techniques, patient care equipment, supplies and case cart process

Requires accuracy and attention to record detail; must be alert to priority changes and have the ability to modify accordingly

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS

Internal: Physicians, nursing staff, surgery technicians, other department personnel,

patients and visitors.

External: Vendors

ENVIRONMENT

Potential exposure to Ethylene Oxide Gas, disinfectants, blood and body fluids.

Standing/walking - 80% of the 8-hour shift.

Intermittent stooping, bending and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Pushing/pulling soil-linen carts, case carts and sterilizer carts, over 200 pounds.

Operation of Steam Sterilizers, Ethylene Oxide Gas Sterilizer, Instrument Washer/Decontaminator, Cart Washer, Steam Gun and Heat Sealer, all equipment that generates heat, department temperatures can get uncomfortably warm.
