Responsibilities

  • Escorts patient and family from examination to the echocardiography room and back to the examination room at completion of study.
  • Explains procedure to patient and family prior to the commencement of the test to assure cooperations and optimum test results without discussing the clinical findings of the exam.
  • Follows the accredited laboratory protocol for obtaining an echocardiogram utilizing two-dimensional images, m-Mode, color flow, and spectral Doppler where applicable.
  • Acquires anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician.
  • Maintains patient charts and records, and records/processes sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure for presentation to the interpreting physician.
  • Creates a preliminary echocardiography report for physician review/signature.
  • Reviews studies with physicians.
  • Maintains proper operation of the ultrasound equipment (cleaning, storage, and preventative maintenance).
  • Recognizes equipment malfunctions, ability to troubleshoot, and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintains laundry for examination rooms. Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of ultrasound supplies.
  • Follows and complies with universal precautions and OSHA standards.
  • Follows and complies with safety and security training.
  • Rotates as needed to cover Sonographer absences.
  • Codes appropriate for services performed.
  • Assists nurse practitioner/physician with procedures as needed.
  • Ability to work with infants, children, young adults, and families to ease anxiety surrounding the procedure.
  • Performs related and other assigned duties as directed.



Qualifications

  • Minimum six months experience as an ultrasound technician working in pediatric and/or adult echocardiography setting preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in operating ultrasound equipment.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Fetal experience is preferred, or training will be provided.
  • Participates in staff development, in-service workshops, and educational activities.
  • Participates in professional development activities and meetings.
  • Additional certification through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Requirements:

  • Possess or be eligible for certification in adult and/or pediatric echocardiography through American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Must adhere with the outlined certification maintenance requirements through ARDMS which includes but are not limited to, renewals, continuing medical education (CME) periods, and compliance policies.
  • Satisfactory completion of one of the following; at least two (2) years in an accredited Allied Health Educational Program and one (1) year on-the-job- training in cardiac ultrasound, or completion of an approved cardiac ultrasound educational program.
  • CPR certification required.
  • New graduates of a cardiac ultrasound program who are employed in an accredited facility must obtain an appropriate credential within one year from the date of graduation.
