Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

Purpose:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)is seeking Industrial Hygiene Technician(s)for the Health and Safety Field Services Group in the Safety Services Division. These technicians will conduct various Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling and related instrument maintenanceand/or respirator fit testing, repair and issuance.

These positions support the laboratory in the following major areas:

  • Industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring - integrated sampling, direct read instruments, bulk and wipe sampling
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - training, fit testing, qualification, selection and use. Primarily respiratory protection.
  • Industrial hygiene instrument maintenance, calibration and issuance.

The desired candidates may perform duties in one or more of the functional areas listed above based on their qualifications and skill set.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Primary rolesmayone or more of the following duties:

  • Perform field sampling for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological agents.
  • Clearly and completely documenting all sampling activities.
  • Conduct maintenance and calibration of field industrial hygiene instruments.
  • Assist with Respiratory Protection Program fit testing, respirator maintenance, repair and issuing.
  • Provide Industrial Hygiene Technician support to the Emergency Management Response Organization.
  • Perform chemical management functions related to inventory reconciliation, data entry and receipt of chemical shipments.
  • Supports professional staff as a technician independently performing a range of complex tasks on short and long term projects.
  • Able to learn and apply complex concepts related to technicial disciplines.

Qualifications Required:

  • ASin a technical field and a minimum of 2-4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and specialized training are required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards, ANSI standards and other applicable industrial hygiene/industrial safety requirements.
  • Ability to perform and complete work independently handling problems and desired systems.
  • Work as a fully competent team member in support of projects, plans and schedules.
  • Experience in a multi-discipline, multi-task and integrated/functional organizational environment.
  • Skilled in verbal and written communications including report writing/sampling documentation.
  • Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.

Qualifications Desired:

  • Current Tennessee asbestos inspector credentials and asbestos sampling experience.
  • Familiarity with lead, beryllium and silica sampling methods.
  • Experience calibrating, maintaining, and using IH equipment.
  • Experience setting up sampling media in accordance with OSHA and NIOSH sampling methods.
  • Experience inspecting, repairing, and maintaining Honeywell and MSA respiratory equipment.
  • Working/operating knowledge of TSI Portacount and OHD Quantifit fit test equipment.
  • Experience with penetration testing of respiratory equipment.
  • Experience working with personal computer software including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Access,SharePointand PowerPoint.
  • Experience working in a changing environment that requires interfacing with multiple research personneland Facility support staffas a team player.
  • Ability to work occasional off-shift and weekends as work coverage demands.

Physical Attributes of Position:

  • Certain activities may require the use of protective equipment including respirators and protective suits and other equipment to protect the eyes, skin, legs and feet as necessary.
  • Work tasks may involve physical demands, including, but not limited to: standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy items, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching (high & low level).
  • Work may be in varied environmental conditions, including, but not limited to: outdoors (heat/cold), confined spaces, radiological areas, elevated surfaces, hazardous material storage or contaminated areas.
  • Operation of motor vehicles on site and over public roads.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa Sponsorship:Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
