Position Summary:

The Filer maintains sawmill and planing mill saws, knives, and related equipment and provides help with troubleshooting manufacturing defects during production shifts.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Comply with safety standards at all times and correct/report any observed safety hazards.
  • Maintain, sharpen, and repair various round/band saws and knife cutting tools, utilizing saw handling equipment.
  • Use and maintain:
    • saw and knife grinding, leveling and tensioning equipment,
    • band and round saw guides,
    • the alignment of sawing and chipping equipment running surfaces,
    • saw and knife cutting tolerances, and
    • lubrication and bearings.
  • Change saws/knives per schedule or as needed.
  • Read and understand service and technical manuals.
  • Stay up on new technology and make recommendations as needed.
  • Clean and maintain work area.
  • Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.

Position Requirements: Must meet position requirements to be considered a candidate for this position.

  • Five (5) years of experience and fully proficient in:
    • sharpening band and or round saws and using knife cutting tools,
    • saw and knife grinding and leveling/tensioning - manually and with a machine,
    • alignment of sawing/chipping equipment running surfaces, and
    • stellite and carbide tooth technology.
  • Ability to understand and operate:
    • hand and power tools,
    • measuring instruments,
    • various welding equipment and processes,
    • assemble and set-up of machinery, and
    • forklift and other mobile equipment as applicable.
  • Ability to understand decimals, fractions, and read a measuring tape.
  • Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.

Environmental Conditions:

May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and extreme temperatures.

Required Personal Protective Equipment:

Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times. Examples of PPE which may be required include high visibility garments, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, and a face shield.
