The primary responsibility for this role is to evaluate, troubleshoot, and lead process improvement activities under limited supervision. Responsible for understanding and solving a variety of technical challenges ranging from simple to elevated complexity with SCN BestCo proprietary technology, confectionary equipment**, and cGMP quality management system through equipment, process, and product design. This position will provide process engineering support and leadership to other functions including Product Development, Quality and Engineering teams.

**Confectionary equipment includes but not limited to centrifugal & PD pumps, mixers (batch, ribbon & in-line), steam cookers, formers/extruders, packaging, and ancillary process control equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in GEMBA and assists in improving yields, cycle times, quality, and changeovers.
  • Supplements Manufacturing Manager in day-to-day support and updates of key performance indicators. Able to act as backfill for their respective MFG managers.
  • Takes a leadership role with the identification and resolution of trends with manufacturing issues. Utilizes continuous improvement projects & breakthrough teams as needed.
  • Leads or supports process development trials, scale up trials, and verifications/validations. Maintains a solid understanding of the process, products, and history for the respective lines.
  • Proactively initiates updates to batch records, work instructions, cleaning processes, and SOPs to optimize and improve cGMP value.
  • Plays a responsible role with engineering and manufacturing teams to define user requirements, source, design, install, and validate (IQOQPQ) equipment for capital projects and process improvements while providing regular project updates for executive leadership.
  • Maintains a solid understanding of general regulatory requirements, product requirements, and Title 21 CFR Parts 110, 210 and 211. Mentors other engineers in these requirements.
  • Provides technical support to customers with minimal guidance and balances customer unique requests with true process capability.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of the impact of equipment, process, and material changes on their respective lines. Weighs cost & value of actions with respect to the impact to BestCo's full value stream.
  • Provides impact assessments and root cause analysis in the manufacturing deviation investigation process.
  • Obtains data, performs statistical analysis, and writes process control reports. Provides guidance to other process engineers as needed on CPV reports.
  • Support the selection, onboarding and daily task direction of co-op students and interns during their work periods.
  • Acts as backfill for Process Engineering Manager. Assists PE manager in identifying mentoring opportunities to create team redundancy & backfill ability.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.

Experience:

  • Eight (8) years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment relatable to confectionary** equipment and/or packaging.
  • Hands on experience with pumps, mixers, reactors (cookers), fillers, baggers, and/or process instrumentation.
  • Statistical analytical skills (SPC, DOE, modeling) and/or intermediate Excel skills

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Ability to contribute to complex aspects of a project and manage projects solely. Works independent and collaborative in nature.
  • Extensive knowledge of Materials Management, Logistics, and Supply Chain techniques.
  • Ability to interpret CAD and other drawings, specifications (technical graphic), and layouts.
  • Strong analytical, design, project management, problem solving, planning, written and verbal communication, cross-functional leadership skills and ability to influence matrixed teams.
  • Good interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal staff and management. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Must be able to demonstrate practical problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Ability to demonstrate practical problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Specialized Certifications.

Experience:

  • Five (5) plus years of relevant engineering experience specifically within pharmaceuticals, food processing, or consumer packaged goods in a cGMP environment.
