Surgical Technology Program Laboratory Assistant I

Hourly rate dependent upon qualifications.

This is a grant-funded position.

The Lab Assistant I is responsible for providing support to the surgical technology instructors. Preparing demonstrations, organizing supplies/equipment, observing, assisting students with lab practice. The Surgical Technology Lab Assistant is a part-time, maximum 19-hour-per-week appointment on a schedule established by the SUR Program Director. The position involves handling confidential information and records. The Lab Assistant must be able to work independently and effectively prioritize tasks.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.
  • Assist instructors with demonstrations and monitoring of student performance.
  • Answer student questions.
  • Monitor student practice times in order to maximize the number of students served.
  • Set up practical exam practice stations.
  • Notify the Surgical Technology Program Director of equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement needs.
  • Manage the surgical technology lab in compliance with college safety policies.
  • Gives verbal and written feedback in an objective fashion.
  • Ability to give the student measurable actions to improve skills.
  • Follows course syllabus and enforces program and college policies and procedures.
  • Understands FERPA and confidentiality regarding student progress and information.
  • Ability to present skills and methods in a consistent manner based on standardized skill sets and not personal preferences.
  • Access Online Learning Management System (Cobra) course materials.
  • Document student observations in the electronic document system (Platinum Planner)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be credentialed to satisfy all appropriate accrediting bodies and the college. In addition:
    • Must hold a current Certified Surgical Technologist credential from the NBSTSA
    • Associate Degree or diploma from an accredited surgical technology program.
    • Two (2) years' full time work experience as a surgical technologist in the scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past five years.
  • Must pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting.
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to organize the efficient use of the laboratory, operation of computers and software, and effective communication.
  • Ability to learn the computer laboratory resources, and new programs and equipment as technology changes.
  • Meet Essential Qualifications for SUR.
  • Completion of continuing education or courses in surgical technology and teaching methodology annually.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
