Job Summary

The Scientific Project Manager will work directly with LGR technical staff and leadership to manage technical research projects that include, but not limited to, functional genomics screens, molecular and computational tool development, and automation engineering. The Scientific Project Manager will report to the LGR Program Manager and will be a key contributor to the implementation of the LGR scientific strategic interests. This involves planning and managing projects with a defined beginning and end. They will plan, coordinate, and monitor scope, requirements, schedules, budgets, resources, tasks, risks, staff, and deliverables. They will monitor the project from initiation through completion. The scientific project manager will organize and lead activities relating to the management and completion of projects, which include leading technical update and planning meetings, meeting record-keeping, action item assignments, and ensuring project progression.

The project manager will have skills as a seasoned, experienced technical project management professional with a full understanding of project management frameworks and methods, relevant policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues. Manages technical research projects of diverse scope, size, impact, budget and / or project team size. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to support diverse technical areas are required. They should have experience with SmartSheets or simlar project management software to create, track, and publish project Gantt charts, activity lists, and resource trackers.

Department Description

The Laboratory for Genomics Research (LGR) is a collaborative effort between UCSF, UC Berkeley, and GSK. The LGR is focused on scaling up current and next-generation functional genomics platforms to better understand the genetic basis of diseases. The LGR strives to build advanced CRISPR-based genome editing and functional genomics platforms empowered by human genetics and computational biology to discover drug targets with high a probability of success, expand our knowledge of the human genome in various disease contexts through mechanistic investigation into previously unknown genes and their networks, and deliver innovative research tools that are optimized and scalable for both academic and drug discovery research labs across the partner institutes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience
  • Requires basic knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts as well as demonstrated organization and project management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of all aspects of communication
  • Demonstrated capacity to anticipate obstacles and plan for contingencies. Demonstrated attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills
  • Effective skill at tracking effort and project progress

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Biological Sciences or related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Demonstrated competency in selecting and implementing project management methods and techniques
  • Leadership ability. Effective problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to put forth persuasive arguments
  • Experience analyzing projects with broad impact. Ability to manage project progress within time and budget constraints
  • In-depth academic background and experience in LGR project areas
  • Advanced project planning and management of technical research and development projects
  • Experience with Smartsheet, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams or similar software systems
